Malaysia Day is held on September 16 every year to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation on the same date in 1963. It marked the joining together of Malaya, North Borneo, & Sarawak to form Malaysia. – source:Wikipedia.
To most of us, it’s just another day to be thankful for, because it’s a public holiday. Usually, I would take the opportunity to laze at home and work on accessories, or catch up on some sleep, but this time I decided I’d use the day to do something Malaysian. And by that I mean jalan-jalan cari makan! (walk around and look for food) because we Malaysians, we love our food!
For some reason, even my bowl of cereal decided to be all patriotic (note the moon and star like our Malaysian flag). Seriously, was I the only one who didn’t know they added moons to the Honeystars?!
I decided to head over to Petaling Street (Chinatown) in Kuala Lumpur. It’s one of the older parts of Kuala Lumpur, which has amazing hawker food as well as lots of street art. Besides that, it’s also our local shopping bazaar where you can find fake branded goods among other things, Took the LRT to Pasar Seni, which stops right where Chinatown starts. The best part, as you walk down the steps of the LRT station, there’s is huge grafitti art all over the place. Spent the day soaking in all the art and culture, feeling all happy to be living in such a diverse country (with such amazing food!),
While I was at it, I thought I’d be extra patriotic and wore this incredibly awesome tie-dye Jalur Gemilang tshirt from 27 Legacy Tie Dye. I’m a sucker for anything handmade, and local brands, this was a combination of both! I make tie-dye tshirts too, but major props on the creativity and execution of these tshirt designs. Every Malaysian should own one! Patriotism and style, I’m sold!
Tons of people commented on it, stopped to ask me where I got it & even, took pictures of it!
Keeping with the patriotic theme of it all, I wore a handmade KL City Skyline necklace from Oh, Montgomery out for dinner. I passed the design and idea to them, and they made my vision of the necklace into exactly what I wanted! They work on custom designs as well as have some dope designs of their own. I absolutely love unique local brands, especially handmade things. Support your local handmade movement!
