Previously I’ve worked on spider web nail art for Halloween, but I stepped it up a notch for the movie that’s been the talk of town this month, Spiderman. spiderman1Here’s the end result of my nail art for this comic book superhero; IMG_20140429_181405Things you will need:
– Red, white, black & blue nail polish
– Nail art brush

I opted for using all red nails & only one blue, to look like his costume. I left the blue nail empty to add contrast to the rest of the nail art.

Here are the three designs I worked on. I made simple templates that are easy to see and refer to:
1. Spiderman Mask;

spideynails2. Spider Logo.

Halloween is just around the corner! Granted, it’s not a celebration that is traditionally celebrated by Malaysians, however I personally love any reason to play dress up! This time around, we decided to do a little dress up tutorial for your nails. Halloween is about all things spooky and some creepy crawlies, which inspired me to work on a Spider Web nail art tutorial for Tongue In Chic;

DSC_0149You can check out the tutorial HERE!

Also, here’s a different version of the nails, with a skeleton head instead of a spider I did for Tabby;

Repost*

Here’s a ridiculously easy nail tutorial for those of you who like a little colour, sparkle & bling on your nails when wearing Indian costumes!

Things you will need:
+ Nail polish (base)
+ Bindis
+ Sheer nail polish

404735_453801318006059_720056121_n

Step 1; Paint your nails in whatever colour you desire. I did each nail in a different colour.

Step 2; Use bindhis/pottus (you can get these at any Indian shop selling clothes and accessories!) to stick on your dried nails. Make sure you stick them on properly and they don’t peel off!

Step 3; Paint a layer of sheer nail polish & wait for it to dry, then do another layer just to make it extra secure.

& you’re done!
Super cute Indian nails!

Do note that these won’t last long and are only suitable for events/occasions that won’t involve you using your fingers as much. Similar to 3D nail art, this can fall off if pulled or otherwise.

I have a nail art secret, one I’ve been keeping for years & I finally decided to share!

It started when I was in Form One and a friend of mine bought them for me in Hong Kong. Ever since then, I’ve been using them. So here’s my secret:

I sometimes use gel pens on my nails. Yes, gel pens. You know the super pretty pastel pens that we used to buy and write on black paper? Those pens! Some of my most ‘popular’ nail art work was done using those pens. Like these;

62029_428744562057_1102397_n 62029_428744542057_7910406_n

 Things you need:

  • Base nail polish (I used black nail polish from Elianto)
  • Gel Pens (from Czip Lee, Bangsar for Rm15)
  • Clear nail polish (from Elianto)

PhotoGrid_1376492595029

This is as simple and as basic as it gets.

Step One: Paint your nails using your base colour. I usually use black, because the pastel colours stand out more in contrast. Once it’s dry, use a topcoat to make sure it’s hard. You will need to ensure your nails are fully dried, that way when drawing on them with pen, it won’t dent.

Step Two: Have fun drawing on your nails! The best part is, if you make a mistake, you can just wash it off 🙂

Step Three: Once you are satisfied with the art you’ve done on your nails, let it dry. Here’s the tedious, time consuming part. I suggest doing this when your either on the phone or watching tv or doing non-hand using activities. It usually takes 15-20 minutes to dry, but I usually leave it that way for half an hour.

Step Four: Use a clear nail polish or a top coat and paint over. This part gets tricky. I suggest doing it really fast, with proper coats to avoid any smudges. When you go over it several times, it tends to smudge.

Step Five: Leave it to dry and your done!

I love how there’s no mess, minimal fuss (time consuming but no fuss) and ends up looking like an incredibly unique manicure! All at the comfort of your own home, within a budget and you can do your nails according to your mood/ outfits.

If any of you try it, do let me know! I’d love to see the outcome 🙂

Hari Raya is just around the corner! When this particular celebration is mentioned, one of the first few things that come to mind would be the ketupat, a type of dumpling that is made by wrapping rice in pretty woven coconut leaves and then boiling until it is cooked. This particular favourite dish, has inspired us to create ketupat-inspired fish tail braided nail art,;

The Minion craze has taken over, and I couldn’t help but get all caught up in the hype of it (though I personally love Agnes more than the minions in Despicable Me).

I’ve been seeing Minion nail art all over the place & decided I had to give it a try. The results were pretty successful, if I do say so myself;

A number of people saw it and kept commenting on how difficult they looked. To be quite honest, it was super easy to do, just a little time consuming.
So here’s a tutorial on how you can do your own Minion & Evil Minion nails.

Things you will need for Minion Nails;
– Yellow, black, white and blue Nailpolish (All from Elianto)
– Nail art brush (from Daiso, a pack of 6 for RM5).

minion nailsStep 1. Paint your nails in yellow. I did two layers of nail polish. Make sure it is completely dry before you proceed to the second step.
Step 2. Paint your tip with blue (the Minion’s overalls).
Step 3 and 4. Add black lines as shown in picture.
Step 5. Use grey to create a circle in the middle of the black line for the goggle. If you don’t have grey (like me!) mix a teeny bit of black with a bigger ratio of white.
Step 6. Draw on a white round in the middle of the grey. The idea is to make it look like the grey is circling the white.
Step 7. Add on the finer details; mouth, hair and eyeball.

The tedious part, is waiting for each part of it to dry before moving to the next step. However, the end result is quite worth it 🙂
You can also try to do variety of expressions and also, Evil Minions!

Things you will need for Evil Minion Nails;
– Purple, black and white nail polish.
– Nail art brush.

evil mini

Step 1. Paint your nails a dark shade of purple.
Step 2. Add a thick grey line at the tip. I again, mixed black & white nail polish for that.
Step 3. Add the black details as shown in picture.
Step 4. Use grey and create two rounds on the black line for the goggles.
Step 5. Add white rounds inside the grey ones, and also add teeth details on the mouth. The teeth should be uneven and some slightly longer than the other.
Step 6. Add eyeballs using black nail polish.
Step 7. Mix a little bit of white with your base purple nail polish for the hair. Draw on messy lines for the hair.

IMG_20130720_015634 I hope the illustrations (done using Paint, that’s what’s up!) was helping! Hope you unicorns give it a try & do let me know how it goes!

DIY Franken Nail Polish

24 Wednesday Apr 2013

Some of you have probably heard of Franken nail polish, but for those of you who haven’t here’s a brief explaination. Franken nail polish is basically being able to personalize your own nail polish by experimenting with mixture of nail polish, glitter and pigments. The whole idea behind it is to create your own unique nail polish that can’t be replicated or you can attempt to replicate a colour you saw in a magazine, or online that was out of your budget.

I’m very much a nail person (as you can probably tell by the majority of my DIYs being nail art related :3 ) & this particular DIY saved me many times. Yes, it saved me! Have you ever been stuck in a situation where you have the perfect dress but you can’t find the right shade of nail polish to go with it? Or even if you did, it was too pricey for your budget? Been there way too many times.

Here are some basic Fraken nail polish DIYs that I always do.

1. Mixing eyeshadow pigment into transparent nail polish to create a new nail polish colour.

Transparent nail polish from Elianto (RM5.50) & eyeshadow was a gift from a friend. However I dropped it and it broke all over the place. I just used added it into the bottle of clear nail polish and shook it until it mixed really well and ta-daaa! A new nail polish colour (and now you can have nails to match your eyeshadow!)

The trick is the consistency, so try with a little bit of pigment and test it before you add on more pigment. It all depends on the colour you want.

2. Add sparkle bits to transparent nail polish.

This is as easy as it gets! Just add glitter to transparent nail polish, shake it properly and apply on nails. The more glitter, the better as it will look more obvious on your nails. I usually add 2 to 3 different coloured glitter together to give it a more festive feel.
instaImage_89
3. Add more than one eyeshadow pigment to the nail polish.

The previous franken I did using just purple eyeshadow, I added bronze eyeshadow pigment as well to give it a different colour. I usually add on colours when I get bored with the colour.
instaImage_90These are probably the most absolute basic of all basic Frankens and just a rough idea of how it’s done. You can always add different colours, and also different types of glittered for texture. The possibilities with these are endless. Go wild and just have fun with it. There’s no wrong or right way to do it 🙂

Who would have thought finding the perfect colour you’ve been looking for was as easy as this? 🙂

DIY Tie Dye Nails.

I love nail art and constantly am looking for the next thing that inspired me.
I decided to infuse my love for nail art, rainbows & tie-dye prints.
& the outcome was real pretty! (If I do say so myself 😉 )
1
Since I liked how it turned out, I worked out this tutorial to share.
I’m not a nail polish snob and use just about any brand from OPI to the RM2 ones sold at pasar malam. But for this particular tutorial I used Elianto nail polish & these are the colours I used;
2

I didn’t have orange so I had to improve and mix the colours I already had. The colour wheel they taught use way back in primary school actually is of use at times like these. A little bit of red + a lot of yellow =  orange 🙂

3

Firstly, you will need to do a base coat. The usual,
Right after that, apply lines of nail polish according to how you’d like your tie dye effect to look like. I did one with the sequence of the colours of the rainbow.

4While nail polish is still slightly wet, apply a top coat or a seethrough coat over it. This is to ensure your nail is still wet and stick for the next part you need to do.

Drag a pin or any sharp pointy object across the nail (from left to right) from the first colour you applied, to the last. Mine was from red to purple. Repeat the same thing until it turns out like this;

5

Now repeat the process with the rest of your fingers and you’ll have amazing, colourful textured designed nails!

6

Super cute hippie tie dye nails! So incredibly easy to do, and such conversation starters!

DIY Newspaper Nails.

Today I wrote a DIY Newspaper Nail tutorial for Lipstiq.com & decided to post a simplified version of it on here. I’ve seen this tutorial ample of times online, but, using rubbing alcohol (which is a nightmare to find & trust me, I really went looking!). As I researched for other alternatives, I came across a few using water and of course, I had to try it out for myself.

After several semi-failed attempts, this one worked best for me;
nails

1. Tear strips of newspaper (I used the Malay Mail :P), and pick a page that has the most fonts and the darker it is, the better. I teared longer strips (long enough to wrap my finger).

2. Paint your nails in a really light or pastel colour (I experimented with both: Lilac grey on all nails, except the pastel mint one). Once it’s completely dry, dip your finger into water for 5 seconds and wrap a strip of newspaper around it.

3. Lightly wet the part that’s on your nail, and firmly press on it. Do that for about a minute in order to get the newspaper ink to stick on your nail as dark as possible. Do this one nail at a time. trust me, it’s for the best :3

4. Paint a topcoat on it. You’ll need to paint a topcoat or else the newspaper ink can be wiped off. Make sure you like how your nails look, or you can always wipe it off and do it again. Once you’ve painted your nails with the topcoat, you’ll have pretty, shiny newspaper nails!

You can also check out the full tutorial, with step by step instructions and pictures (if this isn’t clearn enough) HERE!
