Welcoming a brand new year with arms wide open. Hello; 20141230_091127As the year comes to an end & I flip through the pages of 2014, I’m filled with a sense of melancholy of sorts and am in awe of how time really does change everything. It’s a circle of life that happens on a yearly yet never seems to stop surprising me, be it good or bad.

This year was a blessing. A year I learnt to let go of unnecessary negative energy as well as people, making more time to focus on the good things life had to offer and the amazing people around me. By doing this, I learnt to absorb all the light (and right) energy. The law of attraction is as real as it gets, and the Universe took pride in proving it to me on repeat throughout the year.

This year I learnt to leave my past behind, to be more independent, to try new things and learn new types of art, to feed my soul by travelling and discovering places, cultures and people who I’ll forever be thankful for. I took the time for myself to learn about myself, and what it was that truly made me happy.

All it took was starting my year of by facing a simple fear I always had: to eat alone. By doing this simple task, I became more self assured, less wanting validation. From there on, everything else fell into place.

This year, I found out who my true friends were, and fell in love with the most amazing person with the purest heart. That on it’s own, I consider myself the luckiest. I am however, incredibly thankful for my past. Without the storm, there would be no rainbow. All the lessons, trials and errors have been blessings in disguise.

I don’t know what 2015 holds, but I do know I’ll make the best of it trying to be a better me than I was a year ago. Here’s to more happiness, love, art & lessons to learn.

Ready for a new year of adventures,
Harmini Asokumar

This was supposed to appear on the front page of a local newspaper for Christmas, but had to be removed because we have more pressing matters like the floods.

Here’s sending out waves of love and light to those affected. There are many organisations set up to help as well so if able to, please do so. Times like these, I count my blessings.

This has been a trying year in so many ways but it’s been an eye opener I am thankful for.

Sending love & light to those in need,
Harmini Asokumar

When I’m not making dreamcatchers, I seem to be doodling them. Here’s a henna-inspired dreamcatcher design. Completely tempted to revamp my tattoo into something like this instead; 10437776_10152497950467058_3199186528906150736_n

10713001_10152460982537058_3288137128200371563_nRudraksha beads are a material that can be considered a type of semi-precious stone of sorts. It is used in both Hinduism and Buddhism for prayer as well as meditation purposed to sanctify the mind, body and soul. Based on a legend, Lord Shiva was in a deep state of meditation; reaching a different level of fulfillment, he opened his eyes, shedding a single tear from which the rudraksha tree grew. Therefore it is believed that the seeds of this tree are a protection from Lord Shiva as well as quite a number medical and meditation benefits.

Quite a few people who saw that I was using these Rudraksha beads in my designs told me they weren’t meant for women as it was considered a taboo. This sparked my interesting to further seek answers if there were any prohibition for the Rudraksha seeds as I’ve been using them in my designs for sometime now and want to continue doing so. I got this response & it was exactly what I thought. Therefore I decided to share;

“Do not let what someone tells you, sway you or give you doubts about women wearing the rudraksha. Anyone on earth can wear it. The need to wear or worship the rudraksha is a sign of blessing from Lord Shiva during the preceding births (this is quoted in one of the ancient scripture).

There is no Shiva without Shakti, likewise the other way around. Hence Shiva & Shakti are one hence the same. Lord Shiva does not discriminate between men and women, caste, race, religion, colour or background. God is available to all who aspire. So is the Rudraksha.”

I feel the same way when people wear anything with a religious background of sorts, like an Ohm symbol or a Buddha pendant. I truly believe that if it is not worn with ill-intentions but with an open heart, it shouldn’t be taken as offensive. Of course there are limitation, but I think it all boils down the the basic fundamentals of a person.

That’s just my opinion & I’m just glad I’ve met so many like-minded people in the process of looking for answers.

I bit off way more than I could chew when I decided to set up a booth at Markets, this time a 2 day event from 11am to 8pm.
10446150_701656156575024_6612510014593618561_oWorking a 9-6 job daily, and trying to keep my passion; Deeper Than Fashion alive can be a pretty challenging task. However I’m always up for a good challenge, and these few weeks have been just that.

The hardwork did of course, pay off 🙂 The reason I do bazaars from time to time is to enable my customers to get a feel of my accessories. To be able to touch, feel the quality, see the colours through their own eyes (not through my camera lens) & to see the detail that goes into it. Also, I get to meet such awesome people!

Thank YOU to those of you who turned up to show this Indian mermaid some support and love. Feeling completely blessed to be doing what I love and keeping the dream alive 🙂

Special thank you to my bestfriendloverperson & bestbearfriend for keeping me company (& sane!) throughout the two days. Friendship like that lasts a lifetime *insert hearts here*

When Deeper Than Fashion first started, it was known as Rainbow’s Doodles. I started off wanting to merely sell some of my handmade creations to raise money for concert tickets my parents didn’t want to fork out for. I’ll forever be grateful they didn’t. I never in my dreams expected it to turn out into what it is today and I can proudly say, all my hard work and dedication to my craft continues to pay off on a daily. Every day I wake up feeling blessed to be able to do what I love.

Taking a walk down memory lane, I can’t believe when I first started, these were my first few pieces;167878_163468920372635_2891983_n 168415_163469310372596_2605110_n 179028_163469130372614_978556_n 180052_163468940372633_8170681_nPerler beads or as I like to call them, Pixellettes (because they were pixelated, how incredibly clever of me :3). As creativity would have it, I embarked on a journey of learning new skill sets with brand new ideas and materials. 392625_281642431888616_940018818_n 316855_231087216944138_6617457_n 304411_231087230277470_5955607_nBeing a fashion student, I always had buttons lying around. I began to use those to create wearable art. Also, I had a fantastic time experimenting with tassels & fringe jewelry;405698_305566872829505_718868770_n

After which, I finally found my love for feathers. Lightweight, flowy and free, I created so many designs I’ve lost count. Here are a few of my personal favourites;242704_515417525177771_248155113_o 403070_299073740145485_307831529_n

429057_339332682786257_287632733_nSlowly I learnt new tricks with feathers, and I started painting on them;196429_446703455382512_1308251077_nHowever my most prized and favourite creations will always be… you guessed it, my dreamcatchers;402160_305566376162888_2120188939_n 408811_324080320978160_686081725_n 559866_517995334919990_2016805799_nAll the wonderful themes I created, all the magic these little pieces of jewelry provided, I can’t even explain how much joy its been to be able to go on this creative journey. The best part, creativity and ideas don’t run out. You can only evolve and become better. I truly believe I have improved over the years & promise to do so in years to come.

& I for one, am excited about it all 🙂 Thank you for being a part of my journey and growth. Here’s to a lifetime of art, happiness, love and dreams.

beautiful, everyone is beautiful, goodvibes, motivation, pick me up, quotes

It’s okay to feel the way you feel. I once read this & I saved it to share, so here it is;

“You are at the right place. This is the right time. Every single choice you’ve ever made has brought you here, feeling this way because this is where you absolutely need to be. You are supported by the earth below and watched over by the skies above. You are a divine being of light and love and you are not alone. Light surrounds you. Love surrounds you. Hope surrounds you. It emanates your very being. If you ever forget, close your eyes and place your hand to your heart. Listen, feel. That feeling of your heart beating, that means the universe has given you a purpose. Love can’t be lost, you can’t be lost. You can lose your way, but you as an inner being can never be lost because love is the essence of your soul, and love is always present. How can someone so full of love be lost? The next time you lose your way, know that its only a ripple on the surface of the unfathomable ocean that is life. You are here for a bigger purpose, a reason and you, are never truly alone (or lost).”

The best kind of pick me up. Ever.

Tongue in Chic TV x L’Oreal Matte Magique review videoshoot; The idea was to run a full test of the product, basically applying it and going through a normal busy day (like I always do on weekend).

I still haven’t gotten over my fear of being recorded, a bunch of nerves, cuts and retakes but it was a great day. The starting of the videoshoot & application process took place at The Spacemen studio. I love that studio, & their two cats :3

I got to try on a range of their products while blending it with my usual makeup;

Also, my boyfriend has fantastic taste (not only because he’s dating me) He bought me this pretty daisy dress from Cotton On. Favourite flowers & cute dress = so much win!
