May I live like the lotus; at ease in muddy waters.

I bought a plain silver necklace from Heart Attack, in Midvalley today. There was a 50% store wide sale, and I snagged this piece for RM20.

As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of one of my favourite flowers, the lotus. Decided to work some magic on it, and make it look like the real thing.

Here’s the before & after;

I’ve missed this space.

I have been working on ample things at this point of time. Besides being a full time creative buyer, contributing for Tongue in Chic, freelance odd jobs, I also am my own boss and worker for Deeper Than Fashion. From creating new pieces of art for people to wear by hand, to scouting out new designs and hand-picking accessories, to taking pictures, editing and updating the online store, to customer service and being able to provide the best to my customers, to packaging and postage to ensure everything runs smoothly, to updating customers of their tracking codes and keeping tabs on Pos Laju.

It’s been a whirlwind of 95725950693 things to do, I haven’t had time to breathe. But I love what I do and I do what I love. It keeps me going and I’m blessed 🙂

Also, I’ve been crazy busy with accessory making for Markets;

Here’s a little teaser of some of my original handmade designs that’s going to be sold at the bazaar. I didn’t want to give away all the magic you’ll see there;

I started it to help me get inspired on the go, and also, hopefully, to inspire people too 🙂

Wanderlust Jar.

wan·der·lust
noun –  is a strong desire for or impulse to wander, travel and explore the world.

One of my bestfriends, Tabby inspired me to start collect RM5 like she does. The reason behind my motivation, besides this incredibly cute unicorn jar (that has become my Wanderlust jar) that I purchased for the adorable Shelby of Bisou BonBon & Bisou Rose (who makes some really amazing all-natural handcrafted bath and body care), is I wanted to save up to treat myself to beach holidays.

My excuse for not travelling was always that I couldn’t save enough or I found it too difficult to do. Being the mermaid I am (self-proclaimed, but I’m convinced I am), I tried my level best to save every RM5 I got after receiving it, thinking of my goal; the sun, sand and sea.

When it came down to it, it was mostly mind over matter. The thought of how every RM5 would bring me closer to a beautiful beach, became my reason to save it. Once I got used got to it, it got easier and easier. Everytime I get an RM5, it goes straight into the jar, no excuses.

1234640_10151630525927058_368343709_nEveryone has a different motivation, something they want. Mine is the beach.
& hey, the RM5’s in the jar, paid for half my trip to Perhentian! 🙂

Hindu Art Fusions.

I love social media and how it connects me to some incredibly talented people. This girl commented on my dreamcatchers on Instagram, which is how I found Arini from Indonesia who is obsessed with the Indian culture and infuses it in all her artwork. She does cartoon-like drawings of Hindu gods as well as fusions like The Indian Little Mermaid and other Disney Princesses.

Since we loved each others artwork, we decided to do a trade (dreamcatchers for drawings) & this is what she came up with;

858928_511198075599716_394256352_oA digital artwork of me, as a traditional Indian girl, with a tray of dreamcatchers.

Untitled-1  & this gorgeous hand-drawn and colour penciled artwork of Lord Ganesha with Deeper Than Fashion dreamcatchers.

Check out her complete set of artwork here ; Art-rinay Illustrations. She’s open to custom orders too 🙂

On a completely unrelated note (or maybe somewhat related due to Lord Ganesha), I found this really nice plain white tee white Lord Ganesha printed on it for RM19 & decided to tie dye it. The end result;

custom dreamcatchers, dreamcatchers, dreamcatchers and what they mean to me, dreams, why i make dreamcatchers

I am constantly asked this question, “What made you want to make dreamcatchers? Why dreamcatchers?”.  I decided I’d write an entire post dedicated to why I make dreamcatchers and why they hold a significance to me.

It started wayyy back when I was a child and I was incredibly in love with Tiger Lily from Peter Pan. Being a Native American princess that she was, I got hooked. I started to read up on their culture, clothing, beliefs and, the dreamcatcher. The Native Americans believe that a dreamcatcher captures all your bad dreams, and only sends you good ones. Sort of like a nightmare filter.  I’ve always been a dreamer, and the word ‘dream’ has always been one of my favourite words and something I believe in. I couldn’t think of a more perfect fit 🙂

I took the initiative to learn how to start making my own because all the dreamcatchers I saw or found, didn’t feel right to me. I wanted something that would suit my personality, my ideas and of course, my dreams. From then on, I started making my own. My own custom dreamcatchers, with themes, designs and ideas I can come up with. Something that I couldn’t find anywhere else and would set me apart from the other people who make them, a style and something special I could call my own. My own form of magic. I constantly evolved and tried new ideas, trying to update myself with fresh ideas, and keep my creative juices flowing.

I found absolute happiness in being able to create a work of art, that is not only personal to me, but also could play a role in someone else’s life, whether it was purchased in hopes to capture their nightmares or even just as a piece of art they could wear and keep.

I wanted to create art, and change the world, one rainbow at a time. There were times I was demotivated due to people stealing my designs and so on, but I managed to push past that (with the help of my unicorns) and continued to believe that creativity and originality will always prevail. I believe in working hard, and staying humble. I believe that, at the end of the day you should always dream big and work towards that dream.

Pay It Forward

faith in humanity restored, good deeds, humanity, my experience, pay it forward, random act of kindness

Today started just like any other day. I hit the snooze button atleast 5 times before waking up, and got ready for work. Today felt like a Sausage Egg McMuffin sort of day, and that’s exactly what I did, went to McD’s to get my breakfast set. I dug through my wallet for change, unable to find any I pulled out an RM100 note to which the guy at the cashier responded, “No change Miss”.

Out of nowhere (okay I’m exaggerating here since it was from right behind me) a complete stranger, handed the cashier RM10 and paid for my meal. As I refused to take him money, he just said “You have a great day ahead, that’s all that matters”. There I was grinning like a Cheshire cat, unable to thank him enough for making my day.

Ever watched the movie Pay It Forward? The concept is pretty simple, someone does a good deed, and the person and the receiving end does the same for someone else, and that someone does it for someone else. Paying it forward with good deeds 🙂

Since that stranger bought me breakfast in the morning, out of kindness and nothing else, I decided I’d pay it forward. I bought Homi currypuffs (amazing huge currypuffs that are so nyum!) and gave one to the cab driver  who sent me back. He was pretty surprised by it, and told me he was hungry and hadn’t had time to stop for lunch so this was his lunch and was so grateful. I then told him about the stranger who bought me breakfast so I decided to do the same & I hope that he does the same by paying it forward. To which he responded, “You should be in politics!” and laughed.

Never underestimate even the smallest gesture because you never know whose life you’ll touch and what difference you can make.
Try it, a simple random act of kindness goes a long way 🙂

Flipping Through Pages.

21 Sunday Apr 2013

I’m going through sudden bursts of emotions & thoughts.
It isn’t even interlinked. But I guess that’s just how my mind works sometimes. Like flipping through pages, instead of reading the book in it’s actual sequence it was meant to be read.

I’ve gone through too many phases and sometimes it feels like I’m a cat thats used up all it’s lives and I have to make my 9th one the best I can with people who matter the most. I’ve come to a point where I’m happy in my peacefully rainbow bubble filled with love and art, not willing to let people in in fear they’ll destroy the perfect balance I’ve built and pop this beautiful bubble I’ve created.

Funny how your clear and honest words can be telling a different truth based on your actions. After all, actions speak louder than words, and stick and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you. Funny how people say that while trying to stop the tears from overspilling and running down their faces.

We are all contradictory creatures, and I don’t think anyone can only ever feel one thing towards someone or a situation. There’s always multiple feels, but it just depends on which one is stronger and wins. Emotions are truly underrated.

I think I’ve flipped through too many pages today.
I need to start from chapter one again.

“Once upon a time, in a beautiful rainbow bubble filled with peace, love and art…”

butterfly, echo, francesca lia block, greek mythology, narcissus, writing

Going through my old blog (and cringing at how ridiculous I sounded from time to time), I found a post that actually made me stop and think. I wrote this at point I was completely inspired by Greek mythology and Francesca Lia Block (my favourite writer, always). Reading it again, weirdly I felt like I relate to once again, which is why I’m reposting this;

46597_428745007057_719396_n

She sat there, a nymph; young & beautiful, with polka dots & vodka shots. Unable to speak, only to repeat.
Lips bitten red, like poison blood cherries. Tears in her eyes glistening like sweat off a rockstar under the stage lights.
She wiped them away with her cotton candy hotpink & crying mermaid turqoise nailed hands.

& she ran. On grass bare footed, with a daisy chain like a crown & torn faerie wings stuck on her back. Pieces of it stuck together with band aids made with unicorn tears,for extra healing powers.

Broken like crushed crayons; Chewed pieces of rainbows, pretty and nothing and everything all at the same time.
But her heart was light like an origami paper crane, full of hope.

Looking for love; in Chinese take-out boxes & tarot cards. Hearts drawn with fingers on steamy mirrors. The hummingbird charm at her throat. Reflections in pools of water. In soft petals of daffodils; Narcissus.

Until she was nothing but a voice, that couldn’t speak, but only Echo.
